Causative form is used when we do not do something ourselves, but we arrange someone else to do it for us.

The general construction is:


HAVE + OBJECT + PAST PARTICIPLE is used to suggest that WE ARE CAUSING SOMEONE TO DO SOMETHING FOR US


Forming causative have we put 'have' in the place of the main verb that goes at the end of the sentence in the past participle form.



PRESENT SIMPLE

We paint the room every year.

We have the room painted every year

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Beth is cleaning the car.

Beth is having the car cleaned

PRESENT PERFECT

He has fixed the car.

He has had the car fixed.

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

She has been cleaning the house.

She has been having the house cleaned.

PAST SIMPLE

They renovated the house.

They had the house renovated.

PAST CONTINUOUS

They were rebuilding the old garage.

They were having the old garage rebuilt.

PAST PERFECT

He had organised the meeting before I came.

He had had the meeting organised before I came.

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

They had been rewriting the letter.

They had been having the letter rewritten.

FUTURE SIMPLE

We will install the tap.

We will have the tap installed.

FUTURE CONTINUOUS

I will be watering the flowers.

I will be having the flowers watered.

FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE

He will have fixed the tap.

He will have had the tap fixed.

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS

Kate will have been fixing the bike.

Kate will have been having the bike fixed.

PRESENT INFINITIVE

He managed to repair the roof.

He managed to have the roof repaired.

-ING FORM

I remember taking my blood pressure.

I remember having the blood pressure taken.

MODAL VERBS

You should fix that camera.

You should have that camera fixed.

IMPERATIVE

Clean the table, please.

Have the table cleaned, please.
