Objective: To familiarize Students with the use and the structure of Present Perfect Tense

Target group: Students aged 12-14 (late primary school / early Gymnasium)

Proposed Task: Introducing Present Perfect Tense using cinema ticket and crisps (with an emphasis on the structure with 'already' and 'yet')
The Teacher presents Students with 4 props: used ticket to the cinema, new ticket to the cinema, full bag of crisps and an empty bag of crisps.

1. He first shows the SS a used ticket to the cinema and says, ' I have already seen the new film Avatar' (with an emphasis on already),he then takes the new ticket and says 'I haven't seen the new film Avatar, yet' (with an emphasis on yet). The Teacher repeats the activity with crisps, he says, 'I have already eaten my crisps' and 'I haven't eaten my crisps, yet' .
2. Then the Teacher carries out a short drill - all the SS repeat after the Teacher the four sentences, when SS feel comfortable with using the new structure the Teacher moves to point 3.
3. Then the teacher shows SS a used ticket and elicits their answer (SS should all say 'I have already seen the new film Avatar'). The Teacher repeats the activity by choosing either tickets or crisps, SS produce the sentences in Present Perfect with 'already' and 'yet'.
4. Is the sentence true or false? The Teacher says the sentence' I have already seen the new film Avatar, and I have already eaten my crisps' and following the sentence he shows SS the props. If he shows the right props, i.e. the used ticket and an empty bag of crisps, the SS need to repeat after the Teacher. If he shows the wrong props the SS need to be silent. This task can also be carried by SS.
5. The Teacher takes two SS from the class (volunteers) and asks them to do a mini-role play in fron of the other SS: Student A says two sentences, 'I have already seen the new film Avatar' and 'I haven't eaten my crisps, yet'. S B needs to hand S A the correct props and make his two sentences with the remaining props. This activity can be practiced in pairs (SS can use word cards instead of props).
6. Guess who???? Teacher takes two volunteers (again) to present in front of the whole class. He gives them quickly the props, one of each kind, and quickly says the sentence, ' 'I have already seen the new film Avatar' and 'I haven't eaten my crisps, yet' and the class quickly needs to point to the right SS. The quickest SS comes to the front and replaces the previous SS.
7. As a consolidation activity SS write in their notebooks their versions of th sentences saying what film they have/haven't seen and what food they have / haven't eaten.
Reason for using tickets and crisps: to show SS that grammar can refer closely to their immediate environment. Grammar is also a lively tool, and it is crucial to use it fairly correctly to communicate in daily situations.
